A Rule of Thumb

You’ve always wanted to know how much your car weighs. Come on, we know it has been on your mind. But you cannot just put it on your bathroom scale. Hmm. What to do?

Well, a good rule of thumb for measuring the weight of a car involves a ruler or tape measure and a little math.

Begin by measuring the footprint of your car’s tire on the road in square inches. For illustrative purposes, let’s say the the footprint measures six (6) inches in length by six (6) inches in width, which is 36 square inches. Then, multiply this number by four (4) tires, and multiply it again by the PSI stamp on the tire. This figure will be the weight of your car in pounds within approximately 10% accuracy. For example, a 6x6 footprint with a 35 PSI is calculates (6x6x4x35) to an estimated weight of 5040 lbs.
