The transition from winter to spring does not always insulate us from those conditions normally associated with the dead of winter, like the flu or strep throat. In other words, you and your family are not out of the woods yet. Here is some basic information concerning the diagnosis and treatment of strep throat.

1. Strep throat is an infection caused by group A streptococcus bacteria. It is contagious, and is spread by the coughing and sneezing of people with strep throat. Also, touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

2. Symptoms of strep throat include:

• red, sore throat with white patches,
• painful, difficult swallowing,
• swollen, sore glands in the neck, and
• fever, nausea, decreased appetite, rash, muscle aches and pains, and fatigue.

3. Only a rapid strep screen or throat culture can confidently distinguish strep throats from sore throats caused by viral infections. Strep throat usually requires treatment with antibiotics. With the proper medical care - along with plenty of rest and fluids – you should be back to school, work, or play within a few days.

This article evaluates the overall safety of public transit, taking into account all known risks, including recent terrorist attacks. It concludes that most public transit is safe, with total per passenger-mile fatality rates approximately one-tenth that of automobile travel. Additionally, the article points out that it is important for individuals and public officials to avoid overreacting to terrorist threats in ways that increase overall danger. In other words, an improper response to transit terrorism could actually cause more total casualties and harm to society if individuals respond to attacks by shifting from public transit to less safe modes, or if decision makers respond by reducing support for public transit.
